6/22/2006 On the mend.Again with the Kate. I might as well keep on keepin on keepin y'all updated. I mean, we've come this far.
Operation: Remove Gall Bladder.
Result: Complete Success.
Now, for those of you who don't exactly know what a gall bladder does (its okay, I didn't either):
The gallbladder (or cholecyst sometimes gall bladder) is a pear-shaped organ that stores about 50 mL of bile (or "gall") until the body needs it for digestion. The gallbladder is about 7-10cm long in humans and is dark green in appearance due to its contents (bile), not its tissue. It is connected to the liver and the duodenum by the biliary tract.
Cool.
You've been to the doctor when you've gotten sick, right? You go in, tell him/her your symptoms, they do some tests and then you wait for a diagnosis. They say you have X. To fix it take Y or do Z. After about five minutes on Wikipedia and knowing Kates symptoms (and knowing they found a mass in her gall bladder via CAT scan), I was able to determine exactly what was wrong. Ahem:
Bilary colicThis is when a gallstone blocks either the common bile duct or the duct leading into it from the gallbladder. This condition causes severe pain in the right upper abdomen and sometimes through to the upper back. It is described by many doctors as the most severe pain in existence, between childbirth and a heart attack. Other symptoms are nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding caused by continuous vomiting, and dehydration caused by the nausea and diarrhea. Another more serious complication is total blockage of the bile duct which leads to jaundice, which if it is not corrected naturally or by a surgical procedure can be fatal as it causes liver damage. The only long term solution is the removal of the gall bladder.
Seriously guys? A week and 3 trips to the ER to figure this one out?
Well the important thing is she's getting better. w00t
Fin 6/19/2006 Kate ReduxKate is my sister. She's a 24 year old professional who lives with her husband (Andy) and two kitties in Phoenix, AZ.
Kate is sick and the doctors don't seem to know why. After they discharged her last week, she went back yet again with even worse abdominal pain.
A doctor came by to check up on her one evening last week. Delirious from the pain and medication she confessed to him, "I don't know what to do." His reply, "Neither do I."
Now WTF kind of answer is that? Thanks a pant load, Chet.
Fin 6/12/2006 UpdateI'm in Boston (Baasten, as the natives say) these days. Its a lot like Seattle, but with more lobster. The rain is incredible and puts most Seattle showers to shame, but what we lack in intensity we make up for in duration.
Anyway, this is just an update blurb for those of you I never seem to see anymore.
Work is work. I finally managed to get my MCDST cert, for whatever thats worth. MCSA is next, but don't hold your breath. Still traveling, still.. yeah.
Kate landed herself in the ER for three consecutive days early last week with unexplained abdomen pains. On day four they finally admitted her for observation and determined that she had a hella wicked UTI that managed to make its way up to Mr. Kidneys. Last I heard she was doing okay and was on the road to discharge. More to come.
Peru is looming on the horizon. Holy crap it'll be nice to leave the country. No phone, no email, no work for almost two weeks. I'll try to make it to Austin too, but I'll have to miss ACL this year. Some sun and a trip down the Guadalupe are all I need though.
What do you guys think of the LandRover LR3? A black HSE with black leather interior. Oh snap.
